New year, new decade, new you: boost your confidence for job interviews

By Steph Dyke, Marketing Manager

It’s a new year, new decade and you may be thinking it’s time for a new job. If you’ve got an up and coming interview and you’re looking for some handy tips and tricks to curb those jitters, we’ve created a short list of actions that you can do to help boost your confidence before the big day.

Research, research, research.

Our first piece of advice is to prepare. There’s a plethora of information about companies out there just waiting to be found, with company pages becoming more and more accessible and the likes of Indeed and Glassdoor posting latest reviews, interview processes, salaries and benefits.

All of this information can be used to give you a thorough understanding of the company, their values and their future vision, giving you a greater understanding of where you can fit in and most importantly, giving you something to talk about in your interview. If you want a more in-depth guide on how to prepare for your interview, you can download our guide here.

Rehearse answers out loud.

Researching the company is a great starting point but what about you? Do you know what your strengths are? What are your key skills? Writing these down prior to the interview and practising out loud is a sure-fire way to feeling confident prior to the day. Bring your notes.

If you have questions about the company, bring those in with you and don’t feel afraid to get them out when it comes to that part of the interview. An interviewer will appreciate the effort you’ve made to be organised and you’ll feel confident knowing you’re unlikely to forget anything.

Positive affirmations.

This is a great tip in general for feeling more confident. Tell yourself repeatedly that you can do something, and the confidence will flow.

Below is a list of some great affirmations to help you feel your best on the day:

  • I trust my intuition and I always make wise decisions

  • I am focused on my goals and feel passionate about my work

  • There are endless opportunities for my career and I’m good enough to go for them

  • I have great ideas and make great contributions

  • Every challenge I face is an opportunity to grow and improve

Get your groove on.

Our final tip is to listen to a great tune. Music is a powerful tool and has long been held in high regard for improving functionality, focus and your general mood. Listen to the lyrics, focus on the bass and let them fill you with confidence - it’s a great way to distract yourself from nerves on the journey in.

Not only that, once you feel confident in your preparation it can be a nice distraction to curate your own playlist, alternatively, if you’re stretched for time, we’ve put together a little playlist of our favourite songs to listen to before an interview.
