Social justice in the wider world of work

Celebrating World Day of Social Justice in the wider world of work

By Charlotte Woodward, People Services Director

If the title of this blog didn’t give it away, today is the World Day of Social Justice. This day recognises the need to promote social justice across the globe, which includes efforts to tackle issues such as poverty, exclusion, gender equality, human rights, unemployment and social protections.

Did you know that one in five workers still live in moderate or extreme poverty?
Just some of the causes of this are geographical disparities; which have been proven to obstruct access to work, gender inequality, and people not benefitting equally from economic growth. While progress has been made in the last 25 years, the wage gap between the rich and the poor continues to grow. Inequalities between and among countries are weakening social cohesion, preventing some people from achieving their full potential and thus, potentially blocking a reduction in some economic burdens we currently face.

Each year, the United Nations sets a theme that directs their actions towards social justice. This year’s theme, ‘Closing the Inequalities Gap to Achieve Social Justice’, aims to make advancements by removing discriminating barriers that people face because of gender, age, race, ethnicity, religion, culture or disability.

Exposing our people to diversity of thought.
At Guidant Global, we’re proud of our efforts to recognise and break down social injustices that could affect a candidates’ career options, but we are most proud of our own internal initiative INfluence that is dedicated to giving our own people an opportunity to talk about the barriers they face in their own lives. With groups dedicated to Disabilities, LGTBQ+, BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic), Working Parents and Social Mobility, we are able to bring their stories to the forefront, ensuring our whole team are regularly exposed to diversity of thought and that they are able to recognise and rectify barriers that may be in place.

Improving social justice through our clients.
Because we work with a wide range of influential clients, we’re always keen to incorporate social justice initiatives into those relationships too.

We’ve hosted diversity workshops with employers like John Lewis & Partners and Toyota, proactively attract diverse candidates for roles historically gender or race-orientated, and always strive to encourage our clients to think outside the box on how they can open up roles to new demographics.

How we’re doing our bit to combat social injustice in the wider world of work.
We also partner with companies like The Ability People, Offploy and Fuller Working Lives, which are all dedicated to dispelling taboos and empowering people into employment, as well as being a Disability Confident Leader and a founding member of APSCo’s Women in Recruitment.

Come and join a team committed to breaking down the barriers and championing #abetterway across the world of recruitment >
