Celebrating World Social Work Day through the eyes of Reablement Support Worker, Carole

By Selena Ayling, Client Services Director (Public Sector)

At Guidant Global, we’re always striving to find #ABetterWay to place our fantastic candidates into their ideal job. In celebrating World Social Work Day, Carole, a Reablement Support Worker, shares her experience working for one of our public sector clients, Luton Borough Council. She was quickly made permanent after being hired through Guidant Global on a temporary contract.

I knew I wanted to work as a Reablement Support Worker after my mum broke her arm.
I was looking after her and had the support of the local Reablement Team. They were fantastic and I thought I would love to be able to do that. I was already working in a care home so when this opportunity came up, I applied and got the job!

My work involves providing aftercare to clients that have been discharged from hospital. We visit them in their homes for six weeks after discharge to support them with everyday tasks such as personal care and meal preparation. We also encourage our clients to practice doing as much as they can and give them tips on how to manage.

Being a pillar of support both physically and emotionally.
A woman I recently assisted needed help with her everyday tasks like washing, dressing and preparing meals. She had broken her wrist and it had negatively impacted her mental health. Providing comfort and encouragement to her was just as vital in the recovery stage, on top of assisting her with daily tasks until she felt confident enough to do it herself.

Being in this role has made me feel so valued in the community, not only by clients but by my team and managers at Luton Borough Council. My manager would also phone me after shifts to make sure I got home safe and that the visitation went well.

In the six months that I’ve been here, I’ve attended a range of training courses on subjects like safeguarding (which I found very interesting and useful), first aid and medications - and I’ve already booked myself to go on more!

The work is challenging, but so eye-opening and rewarding.
Meeting new people and getting to help them in their time of need brings a real sense of achievement. Personally, it’s also interesting to see how other people live and get on with their day.

There’s an indescribable feeling of satisfaction after the day’s work is over, knowing that you’ve helped someone have a better day.
