#TeamGuidant Celebrates Ramadan: Sameenah’s story
By Sameenah Petker, Global Sourcing Manager, Australia
In April 2020, while COVID-19 was spreading rapidly across the globe, one of the world’s largest religious fasts was being impacted; Ramadan. Having to adapt to a more isolated version, #TeamGuidant’s Sameenah reflects on her experience and how a brighter one is in store this year.
Observing Ramadan while at home last year was a different experience.
I’ve been working at at Guidant for seven years now and am a Sourcing Manager, so it’s fair to say I’ve observed quite a few Ramadans during my time here.
Last year’s Ramadan was very different to what I’ve experienced previously. Not being able to meet friends for breakfast and prayers was a huge change, as I am so used to ending the fast surrounded by others.
While time passed slower when I was observing Ramadan in lockdown, my relationship with my religion was strengthened.
The days felt longer without the daily travel to and from work, and the general chit chat that happens throughout the day in the office is now only done over virtual meetings. However, while the social aspects have fallen short, my relationship with my religion has been bolstered.
Being able to stay home and observe the fast allowed for more self-reflection and time to observe prayers. Usually, there’s a busy rush commuting to and from work, so self-reflection and prayers would not always be given the time they deserve.
Over the years, all of my managers at Guidant have been so supportive of me when observing Ramadan.
When I was observing Ramadan in lockdown last year, my line manager would check in on me to ensure I was feeling ok, as well as encouraging me to take regular breaks since I wasn’t taking a daily lunch break.
Taking the day off for Eid was never an issue either. Even though we follow the moon and never know exactly which day Eid falls on, my mangers have always been understanding of this.
While working from home certainly has its benefits when observing Ramadan, do avoid booking early morning meetings with fellow colleagues who are also observing Ramadan as they would likely have been up early to start their fast!
I have recently moved to Perth, Australia, and there are no restrictions here with regards to COVID-19!
It feels very strange as everything is open and life is pretty much back to what it was pre-pandemic. This year I will be with family, so it will be a very different (but positive) experience as we will be able to meet people and pray in the mosque!
Ramadan is a different experience for everyone.
I know it can be difficult especially when you are unable to celebrate Ramadan with friends and family. If you’re observing Ramadan mainly at home this year, focus on the positives of what home has to offer, and how you can be more productive while fasting.
Ramadan Mubarak – #TeamGuidant wishes all those observing a very Happy Ramadan!
