What it takes to become a Member Host at The Office Group: Jinal’s story
By Jinal Velani, Member Host
As the UK opens back up after nearly a year and a half of restrictions, so are offices. In supporting successful workspace operations is Jinal Velani, a Member Host at The Office Group (provider of stylish co-working spaces for big and small companies), who shares what it’s like to work at TOG and some tips on acing your interview.
As a Member Host, no two days are ever the same.
I’ve been working at TOG for over a year and a half now as a Member Host, and I can safely say that no two days are the same. Today, you might find yourself preparing to welcome new clients into the office, and tomorrow, you’re a tech equipment whiz!
I work in Thomas House, a seven-storey building in Victoria, London – one of TOG’s larger Work Spaces.
My favourite amenity of the building is, hands down, the roof terrace. It is a perfect spot for the team to unwind and relax after a hard day’s work, not to mention the incredible views of London’s skyline (which we have more time to appreciate during the summer!).
TOG has a great sense of design and style, so every building has been specially designed with its local area and original building façade in mind – which is impressive as there are over 50 buildings in the portfolio. Whenever I walk into another TOG Work Space, I’m mesmerised by the different interiors in each room.
A friend of mine introduced me to TOG after struggling to find a job for several months.
Previously, I had worked in retail and also held a Learning Assistant role at a primary school. I submitted my job application to TOG and remained optimistic. Fortunately, I was invited to an assessment day and an individual interview afterwards. The process was really enjoyable and I did not feel too pressured or nervous.
While the assessment days are on pause for the time being due to COVID-19, it’s still important to shine from the rest and get your opinions and views across during your interview. Do some research on the company beforehand to understand what their vision and values are.
The interview stage is all about selling yourself and how you fit into the role – include any previous relevant experience and examples. Remember to remain calm and smile!
Working at TOG has made me realise I am far more people-oriented in nature than I thought I was.
Interacting with our members everyday has helped me grow confidence in my actions. I find it much easier to communicate with our members and the team – and this has continually developed since joining. My achievements are always recognised by both my immediate team and beyond, which motivates me to keep doing what I’m doing.
People say they get the Sunday blues, but for me, going to work is exciting!
Everyone loves work perks and at TOG, they always deliver; from Christmas parties, a range of freebies and discounts, to TOG member events that are free for everyone to participate. My favourite perk was attending yoga classes during lockdown!
My advice on becoming a great Member Host is…
To focus on building relationships with TOG’s members as well as with anyone walking through the doors, even if they are just a visitor or a contractor. Small gestures like smiling and making eye contact goes a long way in helping people feel welcomed. You are the first person they see when they enter the building, so first impressions always count!
Don’t forget – teamwork makes the dream work. I always live by that motto at work. As Member Hosts, we have to work together to get tasks done so we can go above and beyond to make TOG the best it can be.
I love working at TOG as you can be yourself and would recommend it to anyone who wants to thrive in an exciting and fast-paced environment!
