Women’s Equality Day: Kim’s story

By Kim Michel, Senior Program Director

Our third story in the run up to Women’s Equality Day on the 26th of August is #TeamGuidant’s Kim Michel. She shares more on embracing growth opportunities, from empowering minority groups to coaching wheelchair basketball, and advice on finding a mentor.

I started as a Talent Consultant at Guidant Global 9 years ago.
After 2 years, I was promoted to a Program Manager and then Program Director managing 4 accounts. Recently, I was promoted to VP of Operations for Western United States.

Guidant does a great job offering growth opportunities for women.
I have participated in leadership trainings and alliances that focus on empowering women and other underserved communities such as LGBTQ+ and individuals with disabilities. They have provided fantastic opportunities to network with other women in senior leadership roles from all backgrounds and identities. Our CEO, Julia Robertson, is a great leader and her style of leadership has encouraged and supported me along my journey.

Establishing a work-life balance is central to our culture.
Family always comes first. Over the years, a few family members experienced health issues where my assistance was needed. During those periods, my colleagues were very supportive and ensured I had enough time to take care of my family, which helped to minimize some of the stress.

In addition, we’re encourage to donate time outside of work toward causes that we are passionate about.
I volunteer as a wheelchair basketball coach for athletes with physical disabilities. On several occasions, I travel with the team to locations throughout Western United States.

For all of the above, Guidant has allowed me to work a flexible schedule to accommodate these opportunities.

It’s the people at Guidant who make it what it is.
I enjoy working with my colleagues, particularly, everyone’s willingness to help you be authentic and show up in the best possible way every day. I also value the opportunities I have had to build my own path. Guidant maintains a culture of trust, allowing people to accomplish the necessary business needs while achieving their own personal goals.

My advice to young women in work: be proactive when it comes to your career path.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions about how you can develop your skill set and seek feedback from others regarding areas of opportunity. Find a mentor within the senior leadership of the company you work for and schedule monthly meetings. Focus on getting advice to grow your skillset and be open to valuable feedback on how else you can develop professionally.
