Careers at Toyota: Chris’s Story

By Daibhid MacCann, Talent Marketing Manager

Having worked for Toyota since 2018, Chris decided it was time for a change and moved from car manufacturing at Burnaston, Derby a few years ago, to work at the engine plant in Deeside, North Wales.

Learning new things every day
The chance to learn new things is one of the most enjoyable aspects of Chris’s job. Throughout his time at Toyota Deeside, Chris has learned six different processes, so for him, “every day is slightly different, and I get good task rotation. There is always something new to learn, and progression is there for those who want it. Supervisors are supportive and help you to learn during work time if you want to.”

While he currently spends most of his day on the manufacturing line, he also covers for other Team Leaders on annual leave, showing his initiative to step up when needed.

Interesting and motivating work
Because of his desire to progress and keep learning, Chris takes a great sense of pride in his work. “I find building engines motivating as they are so important and complex - I feel a great sense of responsibility to make sure each engine I add to is up to standard.”

A team player
Chris’s favourite aspect of the job is the team he works with. He says, “all of us get along well and I enjoy having a laugh whilst online”. And although Chris is conscientious at work and likes to be kept busy while he’s working, there is always time for getting together with work friends outside of work – “Sometimes we socialise outside of work, and if enough of us are free, the company will contribute an amount towards the event. We have actually been to Chester Races before with the company.”

Taking time out for himself and his family
Like everybody, Chris likes to clock off and enjoy his free time. He tells us, “I try to go to the gym a few times a week and walk my Cocker Spaniel, Reggie, every evening. I find it easy to switch off from work when I am home and enjoy spending time with my wife.” And, for Chris, there’s another important reason to be working hard to secure his future – “I'm very busy at the moment as we are expecting our first child later this year. Soon, I will be decorating the nursery in my spare time.”

Wishing you and your wife all the very best, Chris!
