Then we'd like to hear from you about joining our team of Cycle Instructors. Most of our training is delivered by instructors working in pairs at schools and consists of both playground and on-the-road training.

Hertfordshire County Council has an accredited Bikeability scheme and we work to the National Standard for cycle training. As a new instructor you will receive training, work alongside like-minded individuals, and receive First Aid and safeguarding training. This is a rewarding role with many opportunities to expand and develop your skills and confidence over time.

The rate of pay for this role is £11.25 per hour, Hertfordshire County Council offers an expense program for both car and bike mileage. The council will supply you with uniform and training equipment, all you will need to provide is your own bike and helmet!

This is an exciting opportunity to join a team with a 'family feel' at Hertfordshire County Council, to be considered you will need to embody the below requirements:

• Have professional or voluntary experience of working with children, or of training adults. Your experience does not need to be cycling related
• Have an interest in and understanding of the needs of children, including those with special education needs and disabilities, who are trying to improve their cycling skills
• Have reasonable 'local journey' cycling skills, including negotiating junctions and sharing the road with traffic. A practical assessment forms part of the interview

• Ability to work as part of a larger team and a smaller 'sub-team'. Our instructors will generally conduct training as a team of two, please note your colleague may change per assignment.
• Confidence to arrange finer details directly with sites you have been assigned to deliver training.

Instructor qualification training

Successful applicants must undertake a four-day course with additional coursework. You will need to give your time for this course, however the cost of the qualification is covered by the council, along with your First Aid and safeguarding training. For any further training sessions/meetings, you will be paid for your time.

Typical working pattern

Typically, you will need to arrive at a school to run a training course at 8am. Training usually continues until lunchtime. You will also generally have an afternoon course scheduled and then you will finish at approximately 3pm.

Our courses usually run for consecutive days Monday to Friday. Whilst you do not need to accept all work that is offered, you need to be available for all of the days of the courses you do accept.

The amount of work you will be offered will depend on the number of requests for training we receive. Some periods are busier than others and there are some periods when no work will be on offer. In busy periods you could be offered 20-30 hours of work per week.

Work is offered using a calendar system; you will enter any periods you will not be available for work. We endeavour to offer work at your closer schools.

On-boarding timescale

We plan to offer interviews on a rolling basis so we meet you as soon as possible. Qualification training will be arranged for during December in Essex. You should expect to start your programme of instructing from February.

An Enhanced DBS 'Disclosure and Barring Service' check for regulated activity (formerly known as CRB) and the Children's Barred List check will be required for this role.
