Our esteemed client, a trusted partner of the UK Ministry of Defence, is seeking the expertise of an experienced Materials & Process Laboratory Technician. The primary responsibility of this role is to ensure that our products meet the rigorous technical, cost, and reliability standards we demand. This is a crucial aspect of the position.

The successful Materials & Process Laboratory Technician candidate will join the UK/Fr Material team in Mechanical Engineering. Our client's team uses a common process set and has links to other materials teams across the business. They have extensive test facilities and specialised knowledge of materials used in their organisation.

What we're looking for:

  • Wide-ranging assessment of materials, including metals, paints, solders, and adhesives.
  • Experience in microsection preparation and assessment using optical microscopes is essential, and expertise in tensile testing would be ideal.
  • Understanding general lab equipment is required; any experience with XRF, FTIR, SEM, EDX, and OES would be beneficial but optional.
  • Report preparation, interpretation of Engineering drawings and specifications, and use of other IT systems such as Word, Excel, and Access are expected.

Skillset/experience required:

  • Manufacturing laboratory experience
  • Microsection Inspection experience
  • IT skills

What you'll get to do as a Materials and Process Laboratory Technician:

The successful candidate for this position will provide technical guidance in selecting and characterizing materials and related processes for all projects of our client. They will also assess and develop new technologies and offer consultancy services for the Government and MoD. Additionally, the candidate will represent our client on various international bodies, trade bodies, and standard committees. They will ensure compliance with REACH and RoHS regulations and be the first point of contact for forensic engineering and failure investigations. The candidate will also guide the use and control of hazardous materials, offer obsolescence solutions, and validate supplier/sub-contractor processes. Furthermore, they will provide technical support for in-country design and manufacture and conduct quality assessments of bought-in items.
