Keep calm. Stay wise. Be kind: finding positive ways to look after ourselves during lockdown

By Stephen Salmon, Marketing Executive

With the pandemic creating the most disruption to our everyday lives in the last 12 months, it’s become so easy for us to fall into a negative mindset as we wait for the world to re-open. This is why International Day of Happiness could not be more significant.

Keep Calm. Stay Wise. Be Kind.
That’s this year’s International Day of Happiness theme. It couldn’t be more apt of a topic for us to abide by considering the events of last year. Many of us have a renewed appreciation for the significant role happiness plays in our everyday lives and we are having to find new ways to keep ourselves entertained and happy while spending a large portion of time at home.

Breaking it down, here’s what this year’s International Day of Happiness theme means.

  • Keep calm
There are lots of things outside our control. Remember to breath and focus on what really matters so you can react constructively.

  • Stay wise
Let’s choose positive actions that support our wellbeing and help others do the same.

  • Be kind
We’re all in this together, even when we’re forced apart. Let’s stay connected and reach out to help those that need it.

While #TeamGuidant have been able to keep themselves busy during lockdown, here are a number of ways you can keep a positive mindset during these uncertain times:

  • Immerse yourself in a new book, TV show or podcast – we’re culprits of binge-watching TV shows ourselves.

  • Start making plans to meet up with others for later in the year, regardless of when that may be. It’s great to have something to look forward to.

  • Pick a new creative hobby – why not try painting or creating DIY crafts.

  • Play a game that you enjoyed when you were younger… Sims, anyone?

And last but not least, why not rediscover your favourite tunes from days gone by in order to lift your spirits. Check out some of our favourite tracks from the 70s, 80s and 90s that is sure to be a mood lifter!

We’ve got so much to look forward to as the weather gets warmer, and the light at the end of the tunnel gets brighter. As Austrian psychiatrist, Viktor Frankl once said, “Everything can be taken from us but one thing: the freedom to choose our attitude in any given set of circumstances.”
