Head of EHS

Oxford Based - must be willing to travel there as required (with hybrid working).

Salary: £75,000 - £90,000 (typically + car allowance)

The Head of EHS will be responsible for establishing, monitoring and fostering a safety and environmental focused culture at BM. They will develop and implement the EHS management system framework for the BM Division and contribute to the development of policies, procedures & guidelines across BM, in-line with business needs and in support of the overall business EHS strategic goals.

They will also provide expertise that ensures that our operational activities achieve compliance with company policies & guidance and builds a culture of EHS excellence within the EVM BM business. To lead on developing our business wide EHS assurance program, including risk assessments, audits, training, and development of company policies & guidance.

Responsible for the planning and implementation of EHS Initiatives within EVM BM, including those involving stakeholder and supplier management.

Initially this role will have responsibilities supporting the business transition and start-up program, in particular the identification of and transition of the operational EHS activities from Johnson Matthey to EVM and ensuring a smooth and efficient start-up for EVM BM.

Principal accountabilities

  • Develop and establish the EHS Framework for the EVM Battery Materials division.
  • Drive the establishment of objectives, plans, standards, procedures and policies ensuring successful implementation and integration of all phases of EHS Management System for a major business enterprise; determine project timelines; oversee analysis, budget, communication, integration and approval.
  • Providing oversight of environmental health and safety compliance in the workplace, including e.g. fire safety and OSHA regulations.
  • Work with all BM departments to ensure that all company guidelines are being followed.
  • Ensuring that all staff have an appropriate EHS inductions and are trained / familiarised with new EHS procedures and practices.
  • Be a point of contact, within EVM BM, for input and alignment with other divisions in the EVM Group on all EHS matters.
  • Coordinate and lead site safety and health inspections and environmental, audits, assessments and industrial hygiene surveys to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and best practices, as well as established corporate procedures & requirements.
  • Advise and collaborate with Engineering and Project Directors to ensure that each & every Project has an effective EHS program in place.
  • Ensure that an effective risk assessment programme is active across all EVM BM work sites, to identify potential hazards and formulate plans to mitigate them.
  • Coordinating with insurance carriers to ensure that appropriate coverage is in place to cover any potential risks.
  • The job holder will be responsible for ensuring that activities, products and processes within the EV Metals Battery Materials business, are compliant with all relevant requirements for product stewardship and regulatory affairs in the markets in which the business operates. The job holder will be responsible for the oversight and coordination of third-party services necessary to achieve this.
  • Reviewing employee accident reports, medical claims & incident reports to evaluate the need for potential changes to current policies or procedures. Ensure root causes are determined. Develop & share effective actions to prevent reoccurrence with all locations.
  • Developing, implementing, and evaluating safety programs and policies to reduce the risk of injury or illness in the workplace.
  • Provide leadership to the BM organization's EHS professionals in order to develop and deploy excellence in this discipline for company's operations.
  • Cooperate with plants to identify short and long-term program plans; develop and maintain strong relationships across the organization; develop EHS management staff; set goals in performance, training & development, and career planning.
  • Provide written reports of safety related issues/results to senior management on a periodic basis or as requested.

Requirements of the Job

  • Must be a graduate with an engineering, science or EHS degree.
  • Hold a recognised EHS accreditation (e.g. NEBOSH, etc.)
  • Minimum 10-year-experience in the management of EHS activities.
  • Broad relevant experience in high-hazard process operations/technical support; have a good command of regulatory compliance in this area.
  • Be expert in the of control of hazardous substances, incident investigation, health & safety management systems.
  • Have experience in facility design and construction, as an EHS adviser / manager.
  • Effective communicator, teamworking skills, experienced in system design & development.
  • Stature to network and build good working relationships at all levels in the organisation.
  • Effective decision making and influencing skills to deliver the desired results.
  • Ability to lead, mentor and develop others to achieve successful outcomes.
  • Ability to influence and sustain effective change.
  • Must have experience working in global organizations.
  • Fluent English.
  • Have no restriction to travel - the role requires travel in-region and at times internationally.

Desirable

  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Experience of working in an operations-based role in Chemicals or Pharmaceuticals.

Knowledge of process safety methodologies e.g. HAZOP, LOPA, QRA and PSRM policy & guidance and related international codes and standards and experience as a competent Hazard Study Leader
