Guidant Global is recruiting on behalf of a highly recognised university for a Library Assistant for a 10-month contract with an immediate start.

The Library Assistants work within the Subject Liaison Team, providing support for the work of the Subject Liaison Librarians, with particular focus on course resource provision, collection management activities and supporting the information skills programme provided by the Team.

In this role, you can expect to:

Support the Course Reading provision cycle, which includes:

  • Support the management of reading lists, by adding new lists, updating lists and carrying out reviews.
  • Communicate with Subject Liaison Librarians, academic staff and the Acquisitions team on the progress of requests for course reading lists.
  • Support requests for digital course readings, including carrying out digitisation and basic copyright checks.

Collection Management (digital)

  • Check bibliographic information using electronic resources.
  • Create reports in vendor platforms to notify Subject Liaison Librarians of new titles relevant to their collections.
  • Prepare and place requests for new acquisitions.

Collection Management (print)

  • Assist with projects to relocate, relegate and dispose of stock.
  • Check the stock on the open shelves and update the holding/item records on ALMA (the library management system)
  • Loose leaf filing.
  • Manual handling/lifting of books and journals to progress their journey through the library (up to 13kgs)

Customer Support

  • Respond to enquiries and participate in Library Help Services (including, LibChat and enquiries support)
  • Assist with the delivery of library skills and support, in particular induction tours and events, and skills training sessions.

Other duties:

  • Carry out any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the line manager, the Directors, senior staff acting as Duty Officer or the Pro-Vice-Provost.
  • The post holder will support and advance equality, diversity and inclusion ambitions.
  • The post holder will maintain an awareness and observation of Health and Safety Regulations and will be required to undertake Fire Marshal duties, after appropriate training.

We're looking for candidates who have:

Qualifications, experience and knowledge

5 GCSE's (Grades A*-C) or equivalent including Maths and English

Previous experience of working in a library or information environment

Experience of searching for library materials using an online public-access

catalogue (OPAC)

Skills and abilities

Accuracy and attention to detail

Ability to prioritise and work under pressure

Good IT skills: including knowledge of Microsoft Office (particularly Outlook/Word/Excel), web browsers, and willing to learn new software

Excellent interpersonal skills

E.g. Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of Library Services

customer, in writing or verbally

Familiarity with course reading list software and digitisation

Familiarity with bibliographic information
