Location: Galashiels to cover the Scottish Borders

Salary: £23,100 pro rata

Hours: 18.5hrs Perm PT

Action for Children does what's right, does what's needed and does what works for children in the UK. Every year, our team changes the lives of 370,000 children, young people and families.

Two of our services were combined last year to form the Scottish Borders CHIMES Service. Our work is divided into 2 areas: working with young carers aged between 7 and 18 years and working with families impacted by alcohol and drugs, specifically parents with substance use issues and the children of those parents who are affected by their substance use.

Our office is based in Galashiels and the Outreach Practitioners will cover the Scottish Borders Council area as part of a team of 8.

How you'll make a difference:

By providing a high quality service to children, young people and their families, based on an assessment of need and is outcomes driven.

By delivering a complex and specialist interventions with children, young people and families on a 1:1 basis, group or community setting.

By providing lead case/care planning management, including undertaking assessing, reviewing and managing risks

By attending and participating at relevant multi agency meetings, providing a lead role ensuring reflective and analytical practice review

By establishing and developing effective relationships and channels of communication with children, young people, families, colleagues, community organisations, partner agencies and other external agencies

By retaining accurate and contemporaneous records, using various IT systems to capture information and to produce written reports and present these as necessary.

What you'll need:

  • Already hold an SVQ Level 3 or equivalent or be working towards this qualification
  • An understanding of the issues faced by young carers
  • Prior experience of focus-based issue work to children, young people and families
  • Experience of working with service users to address substance use issues
  • Experience of providing outreach support to children, young people and families
  • Ability to take a person-centred approach
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong IT skills
  • Knowledge of local authority policy and procedures
  • Knowledge of safeguarding
  • An understanding of child development
  • A willingness to work some evening and weekend work as required.
  • A full driver's licence, use of a car and business car insurance.

What will you need?

  • Previous experience of working In an education establishment desirable
  • Flexibility to work out with core hours if required.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the issues and barriers care experienced young people face.
  • SVQ 3/HNC in Social Care, Guidance or equivalent
