Duration 0-18 Months

The UK's trusted Ministry of Defence partner, MBDA, are looking for a skilled System Performance Engineer to join the performance team on a new complex weapon project, which is in the Assessment Phase, three years during which the concept is materialised into a refined point at which it can be progressed to design and manufacture at the site in Stevenage.

As a System Performance Engineer, the successful candidate would be part of the essential part of the system design and a key indicator as to whether the design is suitable. Additionally, carrying out technical studies on missile performance and survivability. The Missile performance studies use system models to estimate key performance indicators such as range and terminal accuracy, among others. Survivability is a new domain within MBDA and studies the probability of success of a mission in advanced and contested environments.

What you'll get to do as a System Performance Engineer:

  • Carry out technical studies into missile performance and survivability to help the project understand key trades and the impact of design choices
  • Develop a good understanding of how the more comprehensive system affects performance and the knock-on impacts of changes to the design
  • Work with experts in Aerodynamics, Propulsion, Lethality, Guidance, Control & Navigation, Seekers (and others) to understand how each of these contributes to system performance.
  • Collaborate closely with the functional domain leads to capturing the impact of any changes to system functionality on performance.
  • Report performance data clearly and concisely in internal design reviews and external performance statements to customers
  • Work in an agile and close-knit team. (The team works in 4-week sprints, the objectives of which the team agrees at the start of each sprint).
  • Present study conclusions and performance data to key partners, including management and customers, at the end of each sprint
  • Use their knowledge at the technical working level to shape future studies.
  • Understanding how design choices affect performance and are in an excellent position to help guide the work done by the team.

What we're looking for:

  • Predicting and analysing performance of complex products, ideally in the defence, aerospace, motor sport or transport industries
  • Utilising MATLAB/Simulink based mathematical modelling and simulation tools
  • Planning, conducting, and reporting performance studies and assessments of complex systems
  • Analysing trials data and comparing it to predicted performance e.g., telemetry data analysis from hardware-in-the-loop or real-world sources
  • Managing system performance trade studies to inform design decisions
  • Planning for system performance proving in support of product certification and design assurance
  • Working in multi-disciplinary teams
