Role Overview

At Heathrow our ambition is to set the standards for airport safety and ensure that everyone who works at or travels through Heathrow can get to their destination and return home safe and well. The Health and Safety (FHS) Advisers has a crucial role in supporting business areas to effectively manage risks, understand their culture, safety performance and continuously improve.

Reporting to the Fire, Health and Safety Business Partner, the Advisor must deliver competent Health, Safety and Fire advice. They will develop and maintain effective professional relationships with a variety of stakeholders including operational safety leads, Trade Union H&S Representatives, and the wider FHS Team.

By understanding business areas objectives, strategic plans and capital investment programmes the role advises on meeting these goals together with undertaking assurance activities to inform both Business Unit responsible managers and accountable directors of progress and status as part of the governance framework.

The Advisor also leads on the delivery of a range of FHS projects to support the achievement of Safety strategic aims.

Accountabilities

  • Develop in-depth understanding of business operations and related FHS challenges and stakeholder relationships
  • Ensure your business area understands Heathrow's FHS standards with respect to the workplace, its environment and the work tasks performed, the use of equipment and welfare arrangements to achieve compliance with specified requirements.

Management of FHS risks

  • Support the development, delivery, and adoption of Heathrow's safety management system in business areas
  • Provide technical advice in relation to more complex technical risk evaluations and mitigation.
  • Provide FHS advice in relation to safe ways of working, processes, or equipment
  • Support the development and implementation of Safety Improvement Plans (SIP).
  • Conduct FHS audits and assurance checks within the business, provide recommendations for improvement, support the delivery of actions identified, and escalate where action is delayed.
  • Support effective FHS governance, including attendance at Trade Union Safety Forums.
  • Support the delivery of FHS Team led projects.

Competence, involvement, and engagement

  • Support your business area to define FHS accountability and responsibilities for all roles, including the oversight and assurance of third party FHS performance
  • Support your business area to identify their training needs, based on compliance requirements including duty of care and competency needs. Oversight delivery of training plan and escalate issues through FHS governance

Incident reporting and investigation

  • Ensure your business area understands how to report close calls and incidents to a good standard through the HAL processes.
  • Provide information and coaching on the investigation process to achieve identification of incident contributing factors and root cause.
  • Provide local information and data at regular intervals to the HAL incident performance tracking systems.

Learning and Improving

  • Provide the FHS Business Partner and the wider FHS Team with updates on FHS performance across all areas of FHS activity within their business area
  • Regularly draft and issue Lessons Learned documents, basing the findings on incident investigations outcomes.
  • Inform communications collateral, make presentations, and provide coaching around best practice standards in FHS.

Leadership, behaviours, and culture

  • Support your business area to perform safety inspections and leadership safety tours, enabling the capture of safety improvement opportunities and best practice observations. making good use of the insights captured
  • Support your business area to evaluate its level of safety culture and, using the continuous improvement techniques, develop action plans to strengthen maturity.
  • Influence and coach colleagues to become effective Safety Leaders.

Additional Information

You will be expected to work a 37-hour week Monday to Friday with occasional 'out of hours' work dependent on business need.
