Job Summary

Directly allocated to the UKGI project team, as the key responsible engineer for the development of the Linux Red Hat solution.

  • Create and build environment with Satellite servers and Ansible

Job Profile

The Linux Administrator is responsible for effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems hardware, software and related infrastructure.

This role is focused on the delivery of the Linux environment for the project.

This individual participates in technical research and development to enable continuous innovation within the infrastructure.

They ensure that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to organizational values - enabling staff, volunteers, and partners.

They assist project teams with technical issues in the Initiation and Planning phases of our standard Project Management Methodology.

These activities include the definition of needs, benefits, and technical strategy; research & development within the project life-cycle; technical analysis, design and support of operations staff in executing, testing and rolling-out the solutions.

Participation in projects is focused on smoothing the transition of projects from development staff to production staff by performing operations activities within the project life-cycle.

You will work closely with Business, project/program managers, and other IT teams to establish and maintain Linux Systems within the environment.

You will also work with project leaders addressing cases where Linux technologies are key to delivering specific solutions.

Your Responsibilities/Tasks, within the project:

  • Create and build the Linux environment
  • Deploying and configuring servers, and documenting the deployment platform and server configuration.
  • Security hardening systems.
  • Work with business stakeholders to identify their requirements and expected outcome.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to select the relevant sources of information
  • Identify the right tools to deliver an appropriate solution.
  • Work with other IT teams to support service integration, and retention requirements based on the input of the business.
  • Work with Security to ensure that solutions comply with regulatory and security policies.
  • Recommend improvements to existing infrastructure.
  • Support actively a "Work together" approach between teams working on an ITIL based model.
  • Provide on-going tracking and monitoring of system performance.
  • Troubleshoot and implement fixes to systems as needed.

Skills/Experience Required

Essential

  • Unix/Linux administrator of at least 5 years of experience including knowledge of -
  • Red Hat Satellite v7
  • Ansible experience
  • RHEL Administration
  • Kickstart
  • Shell Scripting (ksh/bash/perl...)
  • LVM
  • An understanding of TCP/IP networking
  • Experience supporting systems running databases

Desirable

  • Red Hat Satellite v8
  • Unix Clustering (HPUX/RHEL)
  • FTP/SFTP
  • Storage products (Netapp/EVA)
  • OS Hardening
  • VMWARE
  • Workload management is important in this role.
